Cris was feeling particularly restless today, and as you already know we try to get out a bit every day.
Today we decided to head downtown and see what trouble we could stir up. We found a little diner that we had lunch in that was way overpriced for the food that we got. We found some singers doing their thing. We were asked for pesos from no less than 10 people and one mostly naked indian asking for donations to help his school. We also met a girl visiting family here from LA. We were going to stop by the downtown Starbucks and have some coffee before heading back home, but Austin was just to tired.
We love the downtown feel. Zacatecas is such a picturesque city with so many ancient buildings and architecture. I’m anxious to do some evangelistic work down there after we get our religious workers visa and are able to do so legally. There are lots of college students down there all the time. Pray about it.
If you’d like to check out more views of our city check out or Zacatecas page in our pictures.

Usually every day we get out and go somewhere. Thursday we went for a drive in the country. There was a road that lead out of the city that I have been wanting to take for a while now, so we headed out. We found a couple villages within about 10 miles from here that I thought were interesting. The picture you see to the right is a village called Bracho just outside of town from us. It was the strangest place I have ever been and we’ll have to do some research to find out why. We drove into town and saw a few kids playing, dogs running and barking at us. We passed all the life that we saw and drove up one road that lead to what looked like the main part of town. All the houses were in rows and were very small and most looked incomplete. We got to the top of the hill and there was not a person in sight. It was a bit creepy and eery, so we got out of there. I’ll find out what the deal is there and get back with you.

Something I will just never get over is the signs that a little boy lives in this house.
After Austin goes to bed at night and Cris and I begin to break out the cleaning products to straighten up the disasters he created throughout the day, we ask each other, “Whose house is this anyway?” The answer always comes back as Austin’s. But I have to admit there is nothing that makes my heart more satisfied that looking around our house and seeing signs of a boy. It’s so strange but after he’s been in bed for a few hours I miss him being around. I’ll sneak up to his room and peek in, make sure he’s alright, cover him up again, give him a kiss, and pray for him for a minute.
What an awesome thing it is to be a daddy.

I’m not sure i have mentioned this here yet or not, but in Mexico they do things a bit different with housing. The structure of the house is great, but most everything is a little left to be wanting. I’m sure every latin American country is different, like Costa Rica for example, but here you just don’t get much more than what it takes to get by. For example the picture you see to the right is the way every light fixture in our house looks like. We could easily run a full scale interrogation facility through our home! It’s a bit humorous if you ask me. Thankfully the Lord provided us with some cheap fixtures from Ikea that at least tidy up the place a bit.
The other thing that just torc my cookies was the electric outlets. We have no more than two outlets per room and at that the ones that we have only permit one appliance to be plugged into it. I’d never seen that before. My simple fix was to replace the outlets with ones that at least permit two thus doubling our ability to use whatever. From there we’ll just have to use extension cords and power strips. Today I was finishing up the upstairs installing these new outlets and light switches and I seem to have crossed some wires somewhere. As i sit here at nearly midnight, the light over my head is flickering uncontrollably and it’s driving me crazy! Hopefully we’ll fix it tomorrow or I’ll hire someone who is competent in this area!

One of our first ideas here in Zacatecas for reaching people was to just introduce ourselves to our neighbors. So Monday Cris slaved away the entire day making sugar cookies, frosting them and packing them up to give to our closet neighbors. Tuesday night we met the family across the street, they have two kids, a daughter about 11 and a young man about 19. He attends the University of Zacatecas law school and has hopes of being a lawyer here. We also were able to meet Maria who lives to houses down from us. She is a family practice doctor who is retired but still sees patients in her home.
Tonight we met another of our neighbors who works in pharmaceuticals. They have three kids, and this guy said his father is a Christian who lives here in town.
Anyway, we’re not really sure where this will go, but for right now it’s given us some new friends and even some medical info. As you all know, that’s pretty important for us!
